Marina and Orlando are in love and planning for the future.

Marina is a young waitress and aspiring singer. Orlando, 20 years older than her, owns a printing company.

After an evening celebrating Marina’s birthday, Orlando falls seriously ill. Marina rushes him to the emergency room, but Orlando passes away just after arriving at the hospital.

Instead of being able to mourn her lover, suddenly Marina is under suspicion. Doctors and Orlando's family don't trust her. A woman detective wants to make sure she is not involved in his death. Orlando's ex-wife wants her to stay away from the funeral. Not only that --Marina is threatened by Orlando’s adult son to throw her out the flat.

Marina is a trans woman and for most of Orlando’s family, her sexual identity is a complete aberration.

So now Marina has to struggle for the right to be herself. She will go through a battle against the very same forces that she has spent a lifetime fighting just to become the woman she is now. A complex, strong, forthright and fantastic woman.

In 2006, La Sagrada Familia premiered at the San Sebastian Film Festival, it obtained several awards and worldwide recognition. Navidad was written with the support of the Cannes Film Festival Residence and premiered at the 2009 Directors’ Fortnight. El Año del Tigre premiered at the 2011 Locarno International Film Festival, in competition. In 2012, Sebastian Lelio was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship grant and received the support of the DAAD Berliner Künstlerprogramm.

His fourth feature film, Gloria, premiered at the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival, in competition, where became a success with international film critics. The Berlinale awarded the film with a Silver Bear for Paulina García as Best Actress. Gloria represented Chile for the Academy Awards and Goya Awards. The National Board of Review chose it as one of the year’s five best films and it was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best International Film. The London Critics Circle nominated it as Best Foreign Film of the Year and it received further awards in South Africa, Peru, Chile, India, Serbia, Cuba and the USA.

Gloria received Mexico’s Ariel Award of Best Latin-American Film; the Platino Awards for Iberoamerican Cinema as Best Film, Best Actress and Best Screenplay; and the Silver Condor for Best Iberoamerican Film by the Argentinian Film Critics Association. It was presented in numerous international film festivals around the world such as Locarno (Piazza Grande), San Sebastián (Perlas), Telluride, Toronto, New York, among many others and was released theatrically in more than 40 countries around the world.

His fifth feature film, Una Mujer Fantástica, is supported by the Berlinale’s Residency. The film is co-produced by Fabula (Chile), Participant Media (USA), Komplizen Film (Germany), Muchas Gracias (Chile) and Setembro Cine (Spain).

Sebastian Lelio has been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He is currently filming his first English-speaking feature film, Disobedience, starring Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams and Alessandro Nivola.
